Cam FM, Cambridge University and Anglia Ruskin University’s student radio station, has broken records this year. Its ten nominations at the Student Radio Awards (SRA) is the most awards the station has been nominated for in 45 years of radio. However, Cam FM’s successes do not stop there. The station has been nominated as a wildcard in the People’s Choice category in the International Student Broadcasting Championship (ISBC).

Syposz expressed his gratitude, stating “I want to really thank everyone who’s given us their support over the years, as well as our loyal listeners and members who make the station what it is.”

Cam FM is no alien to success of this kind. In 2023, Cam FM took home the gold prize for Diversity, Equality and Inclusion (Sarah Akande, Melanin Queens) and the bronze prize for best presenter (Daisy Cox).

Cam FM is delighted by the news of its recent successes. Aaron Syposz, the Deputy Station Manager at Cam FM, told The Cambridge Student that this “recognises great work across music and speech [...] These award nominations vindicate us in saying that Cambridge is one of the best cities in the country for getting involved in radio.”

Both the ISBC and SRAs are prestigious awards programmes in the world of radio, with the SRAs being sponsored by BBC Sounds and Global. The SRAs consider student radio entries from across the UK, and winners will be announced at the O2 Indigo in London on 19th November. The ISBC celebrates student broadcasting across the world.

Cambridge has a rich history of student radio. Cam FM was set up as Cambridge University and ARU’s student radio station, launched at Churchill College in 1979. Cam FM has since expanded, becoming an Ofcom-licensed station on 97.2FM. It is based at Jesus College and ARU’s Cambridge site. Membership is open to students, staff, and alumni of Cambridge University and ARU, with Syposz telling us “if you’re a student, staff member or alumnus/alumna of Cambridge or ARU, our award-winning training programme is always ready to welcome you.”
