How to get involved with good causes as a new student in Cambridge

Starting university at Cambridge is an exciting yet overwhelming experience, especially if you’re new to the city. As a postgraduate myself, coming from the now-distant University of Nottingham, the movement to college-based activity made it feel harder to know where to look regarding University-wide movements.

Beyond academics, many students seek to engage with meaningful causes and make a positive impact. But with so many opportunities available, it can be difficult to know where to start. Thankfully, the Cambridge Students' Union provides a comprehensive list of societies you can explore here. However, with so many choices, it’s easy to feel lost. To help you out, here’s a curated list of some of the most impactful student groups and initiatives you can join:

Student-led Charities & Societies:

Cambridge University Charity Fashion Show

One of the biggest student-led events in Cambridge, this annual fashion show raises money for charity while showcasing incredible student talent. Now in its fifth year, it has already raised over £50,000. Whether you're interested in organizing, modeling, or attending, this is a great way to support a worthy cause while enjoying a spectacular evening of fashion and entertainment.

Cambridge University Amnesty International (CUAI)

If human rights advocacy is close to your heart, CUAI is an active student branch of Amnesty International UK. Their activities include letter-writing campaigns to help individuals facing human rights violations, fundraising events, and larger awareness campaigns tackling issues such as refugee rights, LGBTQ+ rights, and stopping violence against women. You can find out more about their work here.

Cambridge RAG (Raising and Giving)

Cambridge RAG is the university’s largest charitable society, raising over £15,000 last year alone. They organize engaging events like the Cambridge Blues Naked Calendar, RAG Blind Date, and adventure challenges like skydiving and the Three Peaks Challenge. Whether you want to participate in fun activities or join their committee, there’s a role for everyone. Follow their updates on Facebook or message them directly to get involved.

Student Action for Refugees (STAR Cambridge)

STAR is a student-run society advocating for refugee rights through awareness campaigns, fundraising, and volunteering. They collaborate with local refugee organizations like CamCRAG and host speaker events, protests, and social media outreach initiatives. If you're passionate about supporting asylum seekers and refugees, this is a great way to contribute.

Friends of Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF)

This society supports the incredible work of MSF (Doctors Without Borders), which provides medical aid in conflict zones and disaster-stricken areas. They organize events like quiz nights, humanitarian-themed hackathons, and an annual conference. Since MSF operates independently without government funding, public donations and fundraising efforts from student groups like this one are vital.

Student Community Action (SCA)

For those looking to volunteer locally, SCA offers opportunities to work with over 60 charities focusing on homelessness, mental health, and disabilities. They also run their own projects, such as:

● Big Sibs – Mentoring disadvantaged children.

● Homework Help – Providing tuition for students who need academic support.

Volunteering with SCA is a great way to make a tangible difference in the Cambridge community. Find out more and sign up here.

Opportunities Beyond the University

If you're interested in getting involved with initiatives beyond Cambridge University, consider volunteering with local non-profits such as:

Cambridge Sustainable Food

This organization works toward a fairer and more sustainable food system, focusing on food security, climate-conscious eating, and local food initiatives. Volunteers can help with community food hubs, fundraising, and awareness campaigns. Learn more about their work and sign up to volunteer here.
